Boss Battles as Unit Review: A 15-Minute Plan for Test Day

Review day has a reputation. Half the class is quietly checked out, and the other half is cramming the night before anyway.
Season 1 gave Roxxem two new live modes, Co-op and Teams. Here's a 15-minute review plan that uses both, so the day before a quiz feels like a game your students actually want to win.
Why a boss battle works for review
In Co-op, the whole class plays together against you. You're the boss, you have HP, and every point a student scores is damage. When your HP hits zero, everyone wins.
That changes review in a couple of useful ways:
- Every answer counts. The fastest students still matter, but so does the student who gets one more word right. Nobody is "out" of the game.
- Quieter students get a reason to try. There's no podium to land at the bottom of. The class wins or loses together.
- You see the gaps live. If the HP bar stalls on a certain round, that's your cue for what to reteach before the test.
Before class: 2 minutes of setup
- Pick a song or video from the unit you just taught. If your unit was built around a song, use that one.
- Choose the game that matches what's on the test: Vocab Harvest for vocabulary, Sentence Snake for word order and grammar, Whac-A-Word for listening, or Quiz Ninja for comprehension.
- Decide on your boss strength. Weak for a class still learning the words, Strong for a class that knows them, and Epic for a class that nails it. You can also set the HP yourself.
The 15-minute review plan
Minutes 0 to 5: Co-op warm-up against a Weak boss
Start a live game, choose Co-op, and pick a Weak boss. The goal here is a quick win. The boss's HP is based on how many students are in the lobby when you press Start, so the challenge scales with your class.

Watch the HP bar as they play. A fast drop means the basics are there. A slow one tells you which words to revisit.
Minutes 5 to 7: a quick debrief
Ask two questions:
- Which words or sentences slowed us down?
- What helped you remember the ones you got right?
Write the tricky items on the board. This is your mini reteach list.
Minutes 7 to 12: Teams round on the hard stuff
Switch to Teams and run a second game, ideally a different game type on the same content. Teams splits your class into 2 to 10 teams, named after dishes in the language you're teaching. Each student plays their own game, and their points add to their team's total.
Use Shuffle Teams for an even, random split, or move students yourself to balance the groups. Teams works especially well right after the debrief, because students now know what to look out for.

Minutes 12 to 15: Strong boss rematch
Go back to Co-op and bump the boss up to Strong. Same content, harder fight. If the class takes you down, they leave knowing they're ready. If they don't, you know exactly where to start tomorrow.
Want to keep it unpredictable? Fire a teacher power from the host screen mid-game. Teachers level up too, and every live game you host earns XP.
Make it a routine
Some teachers turn this into a weekly ritual, like a "Boss Battle Friday" that reviews the week's vocab. Others save it for the day before a unit test. Either way, the format stays the same, so students know what to expect and settle in quickly.
And since Season 1 runs until February 19, 2027, every game also helps students climb the season leaderboard and earn skill points for new powers. If your class is curious about those, the Skill Tree Guide explains what to unlock first.

Bonus: use it for FrancoManie
If you teach French, try a boss battle on one of the FrancoManie 2026 songs before the tournament starts on October 26. It's a fun way to get the class comfortable with the song games before scores count.
Get started
Co-op and Teams are part of Pro Teacher, and both work in all four live games: Whac-A-Word, Vocab Harvest, Sentence Snake, and Quiz Ninja. Read the full rundown in New Ways to Play Live: Co-op Battles and Teams, or see everything new in Roxxem Season 1 Is Here.
FAQ
What's a good review game for language class?
A live game where the whole class plays at once tends to work well, since everyone answers every question. In Roxxem, Co-op turns review into a class-wide boss battle, and Teams adds friendly rivalry.
How long does a boss battle take?
You can keep each round to about five minutes, so the full plan above fits in roughly 15.
Which boss should I pick?
Start with Weak for a quick win, then move up to Strong once the class beats it. Save Epic for a class that already knows the material well.
Do I need Pro Teacher?
Co-op and Teams are part of Pro Teacher. See the plans to compare what's included.
