Later this month, we’re launching a brand-new version of Roxxem. This is the biggest change to the app ever. So big that we’re calling it, “Roxxem 2.0.”

We’re tremendously excited about these changes, and I want to share with everyone what we're doing, and why.

The Roxxem vision

We started back in 2023 as an app to learn a new language through music. We based our vision on three core philosophical pillars:

- Compelling Content is King.

- Language Is the Gateway to Culture.

- Learning Should Be Fun and Joyful.

This vision is not changing. Rather, we are applying our three core pillars to areas of language learning beyond music.

What does that mean?

Right now, most teachers use Roxxem as a fun supplemental resource to their main lesson. Maybe once a week you’ll find a popular song, then play 5 minutes of Whac-A-Word with your class. Maybe you participate in our March Madness contests in the spring.

In Roxxem 2.0, you will still be able to do this.

But now, you will be able to do much more.

Press a button and generate an entire personalized, interactive lesson inside Roxxem. Create vocabulary and question lists from your existing teaching materials, then practice them with a wide variety of Roxxem activities. Create your own Roxxem content with the redesigned Roxxem Editor. Explore tens of thousands of curated YouTube videos—movie clips, stories, vlogs, news, and more—that span every domain of language learning and culture.

And that's just the start.

Of course, we love music. But our goal with Roxxem has always been to move beyond music to become a comprehensive language learning curriculum—the digital native textbook of the future.

It’s been a huge amount of work, and I am thrilled to able to share our plans with you now.

Build personalized lessons with AI

The Roxxem Lesson Builder is the centerpiece of Roxxem 2.0, literally. It’s the first thing you will see when you log in to your account on the home screen.

Click a button and generate a comprehensive lesson plan for your students based on your needs for that day. Let's say you want to teach a lesson to your Spanish 1 students about ordering food at a restaurant, using words from Chapter 2 of your textbook. Perfect. Roxxem already knows the context of your classroom and your students. Then we leverage the most powerful AI models available today to create the personalized lesson you need.

This is different from other "lesson plan" tools you might have used before. Those tools might generate a PDF with cool ideas, but you still need to do most of the prep work yourself. In contrast, the Roxxem Lesson Builder does everything for you. It searches the Roxxem library for the content that is right for your lesson. It then organizes that content into a cohesive, step-by-step, interactive activity.

Slides. Videos, vocabulary, questions. Printable handouts. Interactive live classroom games. Key objectives. Assessments and performance reports.

All inside Roxxem. All created with the click of a button.

Teach with all Youtube videos

When you open Roxxem 2.0, you will see videos and playlists of all kinds in the target language. Cooking videos. News. Viral TikTok clips. Stories. Commercials. Interviews and dialogues. Music will still be there, of course!

But not only music—all YouTube videos.

We’ve curated a special selection of thousands of videos that we think will be the most useful for language teachers and students. Play any Roxxem activity, with any video.

We're calling this feature of Roxxem 2.0, “Culture is the Curriculum.” Authentic content in the target language, scaffolded with comprehensible input activities. Is there a better way to learn a new language?

We’ve also launching the Roxxem Editor out of beta and opening it up for everyone. If Roxxem doesn't have the YouTube video you want—you can add it yourself! Just copy the Youtube URL, and we will take it from there. After a few minutes of processing, the video will just appear in your library, like magic, complete with all the Roxxem activities and resources you love.

More than just a game

You may have noticed that we’ve been adding new games and activities over the past year. This was an intentional strategy for us, as part of our build up to Roxxem 2.0.

Vocab Harvest: learn words by matching words to their definitions.

Sentence Snake: learn sentence structure by putting a sentence in the right order.

Quiz Ninja: deepen comprehension by answering multiple choice quiz questions.

Assessments and Tests: answer different types of questions and get an assessment score.

Progress Tracking: track your language learning progress over time.

In other words, Roxxem is now just much more than a fill-in-the-blank game.

What’s more, all these activities have been designed from the beginning with one primary goal: to work together. They are the building blocks for an entire language learning lesson. Each activity is great on its own. But it's when they are combined together in a structured way, that their true power is unlocked. The Roxxem Lesson Builder is the culmination of this vision.

Vocabulary lists

In Roxxem 2.0, teachers will be able to create their own vocabulary lists. You can create lists from Roxxem content like videos or playlists, import your own existing lists, or generate new ones with AI. You will even be able to generate lists automatically from the content on any web page!

Search vocabulary lists created by other teachers, share your lists with students, and remix as you choose.

Roxxem vocabulary lists are designed to be used with Roxxem activities. Instead of playing Vocab Harvest just from a video, for example, now you can play Vocab Harvest directly from a vocabulary list. All Roxxem activities, including video-based activities like Whac-A-Word, will eventually support vocabulary lists.

Question sets

Teachers will be able to create their own lists of questions in Roxxem, about any topic or theme. Just like vocabulary lists, you will be able to use these sets with different Roxxem activities.

Roxxem question sets are very flexible. The questions can be associated with a piece of content like an interactive video or a webpage. They can also be independent of any content. Create an assessment with Roxxem questions, or play games like Vocab Harvest or Quiz Ninja. You can even feed a question set into the Roxxem Lesson Builder to create an entire lesson from scratch!

Like vocabulary lists, you can generate questions from Roxxem content, from a webpage, or import your own questions. Questions can be generated with AI or manually added. All questions will have automatic translations, so students can toggle between their target and native language as needed. Search, share, and remix as you choose.

It's a whole new way to use Roxxem.

Performance Reports

No language lesson is complete without assessment. That's why we built assessment into Roxxem 2.0 from the ground up.

After each game and activity, receive a comprehensive report with key takeaways about student performance, understanding, and personalized suggestions for improvement.

Performance Reports will be saved to a special section of Roxxem and you will be able to see and search all past reports.

New Progress Page

Roxxem 2.0 will launch with a completely redesigned “Progress” page where teachers can comprehensively track all student progress and usage on Roxxem.

See exactly what students are doing—and see detailed stats for your whole class as well. Think lots of awesome charts!

Get personalized recommendations for what activities your students enjoy and how their can improve their language skills.

The new Progress Page interfaces with our new Performance Reports in a powerful way. Performance Reports give teachers a very granular way to understand student learning. The Progress Page incorporates report data to offer more accurate, effective high-level insights.

A better onboarding experience

We know we’re adding a lot of stuff and changing a lot of things. That’s why a critical part of Roxxem 2.0 is adding better support for teachers and students as they learn about our new features.

New look, new icon, new mascot

We love our old icon (a stylized music note), but it’s too closely associated with songs specifically. With Roxxem 2.0, we are going to debut a new icon that better represents what Roxxem is now.

To represent our new brand, we will also have a new mascot. Sneak peak soon, I promise!

In addition to our new icon and mascot, expect to see a facelift in terms of the design and layout of many areas of the app.

A change to our plans and pricing

With the launch of Roxxem 2.0, our plans will change, and our pricing will increase.

We will share more details on these changes as we get closer to launch, but here are three commitments we'll make right now:

1. We will keep our free plan mostly the same. We still want Roxxem to be accessible to every teacher.

2. We will set a new fair price that is sustainable for our business. Since we launched Roxxem three years ago, we have never increased the price of a Roxxem subscription, while our costs have continued to go up. In order to sustain our business, a price increase is necessary.

3. We will help all existing subscribers who can't afford a price increase. We understand times are tough right now. If you want to, you will be able to stay on your current pricing plan for one additional year.

We still want Roxxem to be great value for all teachers, and it still will be!

When I first created Roxxem, it was just going to be a fun game for my own classroom. I never imagined that it would one day be used by tens of thousands of teachers, and hundreds of thousands of students, around the world.

It's been absolutely amazing to watch Roxxem's growth over the past few years.

Even though I'm not teaching anymore (Roxxem is more than a full-time job!), I still feel so connected to all the teachers out there doing the incredibly difficult but important task, day in and day out, of helping young people grow and reach their potential as human beings, through the wonder and joy of exploring a different language and culture. If Roxxem helped you do that for even one second, then that's a very good thing.

Thank you for using Roxxem. Thank you for every game played, every feedback message sent. Thank you for putting your trust in me. Thank you for supporting me, and the whole Roxxem team, through many, many growing pains.

I'm so grateful.

And I hope you'll join me on this next step in our journey.

Roxxem is no longer a baby, just hatched from the shell. It's time for Roxxem to spread its wings and fly.

It's no exaggeration to say that this is the biggest moment in the history of our company, and that Roxxem will live or die on the success of this relaunch.
