Thanksgiving Vocabulary for ESL Students: Food, Family, and Dinner Phrases

Ana
Thanksgiving vocabulary for ESL students, paired with songs on Roxxem

Turkey, pie, pilgrim. Most Thanksgiving vocabulary lists stop there. But if your students are invited to a real Thanksgiving dinner, those three words won't get them very far.

This list covers what people might actually say around the table, grouped so you can teach it in short chunks. We paired each group with a song on Roxxem so students hear the language in context, not just on a flashcard.

Food at the Table

  • turkey, stuffing, gravy
  • mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes
  • cranberry sauce
  • pumpkin pie, apple pie
  • leftovers (the food that's still there the next day)

Tip: leftovers is a word students might hear every year after the holiday, so it's worth teaching on its own.

Family and Guests

  • relatives, cousins, in-laws
  • host (the person who invites everyone)
  • guest
  • to gather, to get together
  • to catch up (to talk about what's new)

Song pairing: All Together Now by The Beatles is a beginner friendly sing-along about everyone joining in.

Feelings and Gratitude

  • thankful, grateful
  • to appreciate
  • lucky, blessed
  • full (as in I'm so full!)

Song pairing: Thankful by Ringo Starr and Alison Krauss, or What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.

Useful Phrases at Dinner

  • Could you pass the ___, please?
  • Help yourself.
  • Dig in!
  • I'm stuffed.
  • Thanks for having me.

Have students role-play a dinner with these phrases. Assign one student as the host and the rest as guests.

Traditions

  • parade
  • football game
  • to say grace (a short prayer before eating, in some families)
  • Black Friday (the shopping day after Thanksgiving)

Black Friday is a natural follow-up. See our Black Friday ESL lesson.

A Quick 3-Day Plan

  1. Day 1: food and table phrases, then a dinner role-play.
  2. Day 2: family and feelings vocabulary with a song from our Be Thankful playlist.
  3. Day 3: review with a live vocabulary game.

Thanksgiving Idioms and Slang

Thanksgiving idioms and slang for ESL students: I’m stuffed, leftovers, food coma, talk turkey, go cold turkey, and Dig in

Once students know the basics, a few idioms help them sound more natural at the table. I’m stuffed and leftovers come up at most Thanksgiving dinners. Talk turkey and go cold turkey are older idioms, so present them as fun extras rather than must-knows.

The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, and our Black Friday ESL lesson picks up right where this one ends.
